The gift of warmth: our homelessness initiative

There is no place like home. No denying that. Can you imagine going through a single night, with no place to sleep? How about no roof over your head? It is hard to imagine, isn’t it? Well, sadly this is a huge reality for many Australians.

The gift of warmth: our homelessness initiative

Did you know? That if you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep at night; you are richer than over 75% of the world’s population. That puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

In fact, a report showed that in 2016, more than 116,000 people were estimated to be homeless in Australia, with approximately 58% being male and 21% were aged 25-34. Also, youth homelessness rose by approximately 26% between the years of 2006 to 2016. Wow.

Homelessness is not just about having a roof over someone’s head. It is about having a stable place to call home. A sense of security is a human right that each and every person should have access to. When we learnt that on top of the astounding stats above, children and Australia’s youth make up 2-in-5 people who experience homelessness in their life; we knew we had to do something.

Every little bit counts. This is exactly why, we are running our homelessness initiative, to ensure our homeless brothers and sisters are warm through the coldest parts of this winter.

Like in previous years, we are sourcing 1000 blankets and 1000 beanies from our long-standing local Aussie suppliers, to provide to the less fortunate. This year this initiative carries a different meaning, considering we are still undergoing a pandemic.

The experience of homelessness has several definitions and stretches across many cohorts of people. Homelessness can include, people living in crisis accommodation, rough sleeping or those in temporary housing.

Being homeless does not have one typical experience, in fact, homelessness can mean lack of consistency, stability and security when it comes to your housing situation.

For 2021, we will continue to make waves, focusing on rough sleepers and those who are currently living in crisis accommodation with no clear vision of their future. We are here for you.

This year, our Gift of Warmth initiative has taken on a whole new element of severity, considering we are still living in a world that is reeling from COVID-19. More Aussies are experiencing homelessness than ever. It means a lot to us to be able to give back to the community, particularly by providing life’s basic necessities to those who need it.

For the past few years, Look Brilliant has taken on this mission to keep our fellow Australians warm through the winter. This year, our goal remains the same. We want to help as many Australians as possible, who are experiencing homelessness. Thanks to the support or our suppliers, we are able to access and purchase quality items that we can then donate.
